The world faces a growing challenge as the population continues to rise while available farmland shrinks. In the United States alone, more than 11 million acres of farmland have disappeared over the past two decades. At the same time, the way we store and handle fresh food remains largely outdated, contributing to massive waste. Roughly 30 to 40 percent of food produced for human consumption is lost or discarded globally. In the U.S., this amounts to more than $400 billion annually and hundreds of millions of pounds of food sent to landfills every day. Worldwide, the figure exceeds $2.6 trillion.
These pressures make it harder to keep nutritious, high-value foods like fruits and vegetables affordable and widely available. When fresh produce spoils quickly, many consumers turn to lower-cost processed options, contributing to broader public health challenges.
Fresh produce continues to ripen and decay after harvest, largely driven by natural processes involving oxygen and ethylene gas. Some items such as apples, bananas, avocados and tomatoes keep ripening after picking; others like berries, grapes and cucumbers are more vulnerable when stored nearby. Refrigeration helps, but spoilage still happens too quickly across the supply chain, from farm to warehouse to store to home.
GreenLifeTech’s patented oxygen-reduction technology creates a controlled low-oxygen environment that dramatically slows ripening. By reducing oxygen levels to just one to two percent while carefully avoiding a fully oxygen-free state that could encourage unwanted bacteria, the system can extend the usable life of fresh produce by up to 500 percent. The approach is simple, safe, scalable and requires no harmful chemicals or replacement parts. It works across the entire chain, including harvest, distribution, commercial kitchens and households.
Beyond extending freshness, the system addresses another critical issue: mold and pathogen growth. Outbreaks involving E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella regularly lead to recalls, wasted product and serious health risks. According to the CDC, roughly one in six Americans about 48 million people get sick from foodborne illness each year, resulting in 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.

We’re tackling food waste at its source by keeping fresh produce safer and fresher for longer.
The development of both the oxygen-reduction technology for longer freshness and complementary ozone-generation technology for improved food safety was advanced through four federal SBIR/STTR awards conducted in collaboration with Purdue University. These contracts focused specifically on enhancing produce shelf life and reducing microbial risks. In this joint research, GreenLifeTech’s secondary, patent-pending ozone generation technique, used together with oxygen reduction, has been shown to both increase shelf life and cut mold and pathogen growth by more than 99 percent. Ozone levels remain very low, pose no health risk to users and naturally break down into ordinary oxygen within minutes.
Together, these two technologies offer a practical, economical way to keep food safer and fresher longer. The result is less waste, better availability of nutritious produce, reduced losses for growers, retailers and consumers, and a meaningful step toward feeding a growing population more efficiently and sustainably.
